Sid Meier’s Civilization. The history of troops in the game and not only. Part 2: Warrior and archer.

I recently caught up with the idea of telling what types of troops the creators of the Sid Meier’s Civilization took as a basis of units, and how they changed in different parts of this series. This is the second part in which I will try to take into account the errors of the previous. Link to the first part: Part 1.

. Disclaimer . I did not play many parts of this series, so my opinion is not expertly and not the truth in the last instance. Objective criticism is accepted.

Warrior – extremely general concept. It can mean an extensive list of concepts – from a berserker to a sea cat. But in civilization (in all parts), this word means the militia of the ancient world (in the very first civilization it was even called).

Militia in civilization are residents of cities who picked up improvised tools that can be used as weapons. They are not fighting very well, as they do not know how, but practically nothing for the ruler.

The militia in history initially looked just like in civilization, in the ancient world and the Middle Ages it became a skewer of the army, in the new time and then remained a good substitute for the army if there is nothing better. In ancient Greece and ancient Rome, the foundation of the army was the free citizens of the city, who had enough money to buy weapons – in fact, it was a militia, while the difference with civilization was noticeable – they were fighting better than some professionals. In the Middle Ages, the emphasis was slightly shifted – the basis of the army was professional horse warriors (knights), and the militia was only a complement, but at the same time the difference with civilization is still tangible – they are not armed with anything, therefore they can contrast something professional soldiers. After the invention of firearms, the militia practically departs into history – they use it only if they need to defend, and the army is not close.

The result – the militia was used at all times, but the militia shown in civilization is the most primitive type of troops: people who picked up everything that could go down for the weapon and who went to war with this. Therefore, it is objectively the weakest unit that you can’t really. More than eating the militia options in civilization are represented by other units.

In all games:

Warrior is the weakest unit in the game, in most parts it is given from the very beginning. Used to protect settlers and workers from barbarians and other players, and for a possible capture of their same.

Differences in different parts:

Sid Meier’s Civilization 3 Can be a starting unit. Replaced by a warrior Enkid by the Sumerians, and the Aztec warrior-Jaguar.

Sid Meier’s Civilization 4 Can be a starting unit. Adds protection to the city. Not Kechua is replaced by the Inca

Sid Meier’s Civilization 5 One of the starting youths, as in the sixth part. Replaced by the warrior of MOAI in Indonesia and the Jaguar warrior at the Aztecs.

Sid Meier’s Civilization 6 Does not require gold for maintenance. It has a bonus against anti -alarist units.

Archer

Onions are the most effective throwing weapon, it arose more than 10 years ago (therefore it is strange that in civilization it appears after a warrior, but this can be explained by the appearance of bronze tips and balance issues). It was originally created for hunting and war, at the same time in different parts of the world.

There are two types of bows – traditional and modern or block. We will not affect modern bows here, this does not apply to our topic. Traditional bows are divided into ordinary (essentially just a stick with a rope stretched on it) and composite (bows created from various details collected in the place). Archers are armed with traditional ordinary bows.

Archers – a great addition to the main troops. They weakened the enemy troops before the attack of the rest of the army, and supported it during the battle. Archers are also ideal for defense: you take a higher position, preferably in fortifications, and the enemy will lose most of his army before it comes to you.

In all games:

Archer is a good defensive and sometimes offensive unit at the initial stage of the game. Until the last two parts of the game did not have a long -range attack. Great for city protection.

Differences in different parts:

Sid Meier Civilization 1.2 Good unit, has a good attack, but weak protection, so for effective use it is worth leaving to protect the cities.

Sid Meier Civilization 3 The same as in the first two parts + is replaced by the Babylonian archer at Babylon.

Sid Meier Civilization 4 Gives + 50% protection to the city and receives + 25% protection on the hills. Has 1 first blow. Before the appearance of long beams, it is the best unit to protect cities. Replaced by Babylonian archer at Babylon, and on a shot of Mali.

Sid Meier Civilization 5 It can shoot at two cells, which makes it an ideal unit for stripping a card from barbarians at the beginning of the game. At the same time, due to the fact that the archer is very weak in close combat of it should be placed on the hills and try not to let me-to-hand units let him in. Replaced by Akkadsky archer in Babylon and on the sling of the Inca.

Sid Meier Civilization 6 In 6 civilization, the archer is not the first long -range unit, And the second, after the sling. It has a large hand -to -hand strength, great long -range power and most importantly – a larger radius (2 versus 1). With the support of warriors, you can recover the neighbors at the very beginning of the game. The most ordinary strategy is to build a lot of slingers, and then to zapgreat them all in archers, and try to demolish the nearest neighbor. Replaced by an archers-to cultivate in Nubia and on the hulch at Mayan.
